Disclaimer: This project was very entertaining and in no way high quality.
Canoes, paddles, too much work, lazy, row machine, generator, trolling motor... That's it! A row machine generator connected to a trolling motor to propel the canoe! Sometimes ideas arrive via twisted and confusing roads, but never the less this idea arrived. Step one: wire together a pair of DC motors and see if we can produce torque on one motor by spinning the other. Well of course we can, duh. Somehow it is still magic every time I see a generator motor pair. Step two adapt a lawn mower pull started to spin the one motor. This step was surprisingly simple. We happened to have a DC motor connected to a frame with a gear reducer that had a shaft the same size as the pull start. We only had to drill one hole to fix the pull start to the gear. Now we take some time to admire our work and tire ourselves by pulling the pull started to make the other motor spin by the magical force of electricity.
